In Greek myth, Daedalus is the ingenious builder of the labyrinth and the maker of wings for himself and his son Icarus. Their escape across the sky is remembered for Icarus’s fall, but it is also a story of a father trying to give his son a way beyond the walls that held them.

Cuepoxy’s The Architect of Daedalus imagines the moment before that flight. Two coral figures lean together above a resin base with dark pearls; the gallery story places their embrace against the blue-green ruins of a labyrinth beneath the sea. On this mug, the image holds a quieter part of the tale: love, craft, and the courage to let someone go.

Artist’s Note

When I saw the larger coral figure leaning toward the smaller one, I imagined Daedalus holding Icarus before their journey. The artwork featured on this mug is a real, handcrafted Cuepoxy piece in my private collection; the physical original is not included with the mug. This is collectible mug #13 of 30, created so the image can be enjoyed beyond the private collection. The artwork may also be presented in other formats, including wall art.
