Yemanjá has roots in Yoruba tradition and is revered as a maternal figure associated with water. Across Afro-diasporic traditions, including those of the Caribbean, she is also honored as a mother of the sea. Her story carries meanings of care, belonging, and protection across the Atlantic.

The Bastion of Yemanjá brings that sense of shelter into Cuepoxy’s original artwork. Coral and shells rise like a bastion before an ocean wave, not to oppose the water, but to belong to it. On this mug, the image offers a quiet reminder of the strength that comes from protecting what we love.

Artist’s Note

I assembled the coral, shells, and branch before I recognized the story I wanted this piece to tell. The artwork shown on this mug is a real, handcrafted Cuepoxy piece in my private collection; the original artwork is not included with the mug. This is collectible mug #5 of 30, created so more people can bring an image of the collection into their homes. The collection may also be presented in other formats, including wall art.
